Abstract

When separate networks are needed or if a network has reached its physical limitations,
segmentation is used. Segmenting a LAN can extend the network, reduce congestion, isolate
network problems, and improve security. LAN segmentation plays a significant role in curtailing
network vulnerability to intruder penetration. When more bandwidth is required for a particular
network service; creating a segment of the LAN for such service would resolve the bottleneck
encounter for such service request. Networks, no matter how secure, are vulnerable to damage
from viruses, malware or bad configurations. Segmentation can help to isolate any damage that
occurs to a single segment of the network. By isolating a segment from the network, you can
contain the damage and repair it, keeping the rest of the network safe in the process. This project
work did a survey on local area network segmentation. It explains the benefits of using virtual
local area networks (VLANs) to segment a switched network. It describes VLAN fundamentals
and provides configuration instructions for setting up multiple VLANs on Cisco switches.
